Active navigation engages spatial brain systems that passive following does not. A long line of work, much of it from Véronique Bohbot and colleagues, links wayfinding that relies on building a mental map (rather than following memorized turns) to greater hippocampal engagement and grey matter. The famous study of London taxi drivers (Maguire and colleagues) found their intensive route-learning was associated with larger posterior hippocampal volume — evidence that demanding navigation can shape the brain, at least in extreme cases.
On GPS specifically, Dahmani and Bohbot (2020) reported that greater lifetime GPS use was associated with worse spatial memory in a later test, and with a steeper decline over time in a follow-up subset. That is a real and relevant finding — but it is correlational, so it cannot rule out that people with weaker spatial skills simply lean on GPS more in the first place.
Other studies point to a more immediate and possibly shallower effect: people who navigate with GPS tend to remember the route and the environment less well afterward than people who navigate on their own, because they attend to it less. This 'you don't learn what you don't attend to' pattern is consistent and unsurprising, but it speaks to in-the-moment attention more than to a permanent erosion of ability.
Why this feels different from how it actually is
It feels like GPS is rotting your sense of direction because the contrast is so vivid: you can drive somewhere a dozen times under GPS guidance and still not be able to get there without it. That experience is real, but it mostly reflects the fact that you never engaged the map-building system — you outsourced it — rather than proof that the system itself has withered.
There's also a tidy narrative in 'the tool is making us worse,' which is satisfying and sometimes true but easy to overstate. The brain-imaging findings about the hippocampus are genuine, and it is tempting to leap from 'this skill uses the hippocampus' and 'GPS bypasses the skill' straight to 'GPS shrinks your brain.' The actual evidence supports the first two steps far more confidently than the third.
And because navigation is one of those abilities people quietly take pride in, the worry carries extra emotional weight. Losing your 'good sense of direction' feels like losing something about yourself, which can make a modest, uncertain research finding feel like a confirmed personal decline.
GPS shifts effort away from a trainable skill, and skills that go unpracticed tend to fade — but the size and permanence of any effect remain genuinely uncertain.
What the research says to do about it
If keeping the skill matters to you, the supported move is to practice active navigation sometimes — the way you'd keep any skill from fading. That can mean studying the map before you set off and trying to hold the overall layout in mind, navigating familiar trips without turn-by-turn prompts, or orienting yourself by landmarks and cardinal direction rather than only by the next instruction.
Using GPS as a check rather than a crutch preserves the cognitive work that seems to matter. Forming your own plan for how to get somewhere and using the app to confirm or recover keeps the map-building system engaged, which is the part passive following skips. The general principle from the navigation literature is that effortful, self-directed wayfinding is what exercises the relevant systems.
More broadly, this is one instance of a cognitive-offloading tradeoff: handing a task to a tool frees attention but forgoes the practice. Deciding deliberately which skills you want to keep sharp — and occasionally doing those the hard way — is the reasonable response, rather than abandoning a genuinely useful tool.
