Why this feels different from how it actually is

Modern life inflates the apparent size of your social world. Contact lists, follower counts, and group chats can hold thousands of names, which makes a shrinking set of people you actually talk to feel like a personal shortfall. But most of those connections sit far outside the layers Dunbar describes as active relationships — they are recognised contacts, not friendships you are maintaining.

There is also a strong cultural script that more friends is better and that a thinning circle signals something has gone wrong. The research suggests the opposite framing: a small number of close ties plus a wider ring of looser ones is roughly what capacity allows, and concentrating limited time on fewer people is often what keeps the inner layers strong.

And because everyone else's outer-layer contacts are visible while their actual close circle is not, other people can appear to be effortlessly maintaining huge networks. What you usually cannot see is that their genuinely active relationships are subject to the same finite ceiling as yours.
