That means staying curious, keeping a wide and loosely-connected network, and saying yes to promising but unscripted opportunities rather than committing to a single rigid plan.
Research on networks finds that a striking share of jobs come through weak ties — acquaintances rather than close friends — because they connect you to information and openings outside your immediate circle. Keeping those loose connections alive is one of the more reliable ways to manufacture your own luck, since it widens the surface area where chance can find you.
It also helps to treat timing as information rather than as a verdict. If you graduated or switched fields into a bad market, the research suggests the early penalty is real but tends to fade, and that mobility — changing employers and roles — is one of the main ways people recover lost ground. Knowing the headwind is timing, not you, makes it easier to keep moving rather than conclude you have failed.
What the research says does not help
Pure-grind narratives — the belief that enough effort guarantees the outcome regardless of circumstances — do not match the data and can be corrosive. They lead people to keep doubling down against a structural headwind and to read timing-driven setbacks as personal inadequacy, which is both inaccurate and demoralizing.
Equally, concluding that 'it's all luck, so effort is pointless' is not supported and is its own trap. Skill and effort are usually necessary; they are what let you convert a lucky break into an outcome when it appears.
