The 'memory' account of why time seems to speed up holds that novel experiences create rich, separable memories that make a stretch feel long in hindsight, while routine produces few new memories, so the period compresses and seems to have flown by. Repetitive, similar days leave little for memory to hang on to.

Layered on top is the proportional theory, often traced to William James, which notes that each successive year is a smaller fraction of the life you have already lived — a year is a tenth of a ten-year-old's life but a fortieth of a forty-year-old's. This is offered as part of why the years feel faster as we age, alongside the memory and novelty effects.

Why this feels different from how it actually is

The two experiences feel contradictory because we assume time should have one consistent speed, so a day that crawled and a year that vanished seem like they cannot both be accurate. But they are answering different questions — 'how does this feel right now?' versus 'how much do I remember happening?' — and there is no reason those answers should match.

Routine is the hinge. The very sameness that makes a day feel tedious and slow in the moment is exactly what makes the period forgettable and therefore short in memory. So the structure that drags while you live it is the structure that compresses once it is behind you — which is why the paradox is so common in stretches of repetitive adult life and parenting.

Marking and recording events — through photos, notes, or simply paying deliberate attention to what makes a day different — gives memory more to hold onto, which can counter the sense that whole months slipped by unnoticed. The aim is to create separable markers rather than an undifferentiated blur.

For the long-feeling present, the opposite logic applies. Because attention to the passage of time stretches it, becoming absorbed in an activity rather than clock-watching tends to ease the moment-to-moment drag. Engagement shortens the felt day even as it enriches the remembered year.

What the research says does not help

Trying to 'fix' the long day and the short year with the same approach does not work, because they have opposite causes. Filling every moment to make the day pass faster can also make the period more uniform and therefore more forgettable, which can worsen the sense that the years are vanishing.

Simply resolving to 'be more present' without changing what fills your time tends to have limited effect on the retrospective compression. The memory account suggests that what shortens the years is a lack of distinct, novel events — and that is addressed by varying experience, not by attitude alone.

Waiting for the feeling to pass on its own rarely helps either. Routine, by its nature, keeps producing the same low rate of new memories, so without some change to novelty or variety the compression of remembered time tends to continue rather than correct itself.
