What the data actually shows
Jeremy Bailenson's 2021 paper laid out the nonverbal-overload theory of 'Zoom fatigue,' proposing four main mechanisms: excessive close-up eye contact and large faces, the cognitive load of constantly seeing yourself, reduced physical mobility because you must stay in frame, and the increased effort of producing and interpreting nonverbal cues that video distorts or strips out. It is a theoretical framework grounded in prior research on nonverbal communication, offered as an explanation to be tested rather than a finished verdict.
Alongside the theory, Bailenson's group and others developed measures of videoconferencing fatigue and began surveying it. Early findings suggest the fatigue is real and common, and that some factors — notably prolonged self-view and back-to-back calls without breaks — track with feeling more drained. A frequently discussed pattern is that women report higher videoconferencing fatigue on average, with self-view and 'mirror anxiety' proposed as part of the explanation; this is suggestive and still being investigated.
It is worth being precise about the state of the evidence. The mechanisms are plausible and partly supported, but much of the research is recent, correlational, and based on self-report, and the field has not fully pinned down which factors matter most or how large the effects are. So the honest framing is: a credible, well-motivated theory with growing but not yet conclusive empirical backing.
Why this feels different from how it actually is
Video calls feel deceptively easy in advance — you are sitting down, no commute, talking to faces on a screen — so the depth of the tiredness afterward is surprising and easy to misattribute to yourself rather than the medium. The mismatch between 'this should be effortless' and 'I am wiped out' is part of why the fatigue is so disorienting.
Much of the strain is also invisible because it runs on systems you cannot feel working. Reading micro-expressions, coordinating eye contact, suppressing the self-consciousness of your own image — these normally happen below awareness in person. On video they are degraded and effortful, so the brain works harder without you noticing the extra load until it shows up as exhaustion.
And the self-view is genuinely unnatural in a way we rarely name. In ordinary conversation you do not see your own face reacting in real time for hours. Constant self-monitoring is cognitively and emotionally taxing, and because we have no everyday equivalent, we tend not to recognise it as a source of fatigue even while it is draining us.
The exhaustion is not laziness or a bad attitude — it is a plausible response to an unnatural communication setup.
What the research says to do about it
The most direct implication of the theory is to reduce self-view: hiding your own video from yourself once you know you are framed, so you are not monitoring your face all call. This targets one of the mechanisms Bailenson flags most strongly, and is among the simplest changes available.
Reducing the other overload sources follows the same logic: shrinking the video window or sitting further from the screen to cut the intensity of large, close-up faces; allowing yourself to move, look away, and not hold constant eye contact; and using audio-only or a phone call where the visual channel is not adding value. The aim is to lower the unnatural nonverbal demands the theory identifies.
More broadly, spacing calls with real breaks has the best support, consistent with the wider literature on attention and recovery. Back-to-back video meetings give no time to reset, and the fatigue compounds. Building in gaps, shortening calls, and not defaulting to video for every interaction are reasonable, evidence-aligned steps even while the precise mechanisms are still being studied.
What the research says does not help
Pushing through and assuming the tiredness is a personal failing tends not to help, because the strain is built into the medium, not into you. Treating video fatigue as a willpower problem misreads a plausible structural cause and usually just leads to more depletion.
Leaving your self-view on because you want to check how you look runs directly against the theory's strongest mechanism. Constant self-monitoring is one of the proposed drivers of the fatigue, so the habit of watching your own image all call is more likely to add load than reduce it.
Defaulting to video for everything, including conversations that audio or a quick message would handle, multiplies the exact demands that make video draining. More cameras and more face-time are not automatically better communication; for many interactions they add nonverbal overload without adding much value.
Seeing yourself constantly is like a mirror following you all day — and we have no everyday equivalent to recognise it as draining.
